Skutina Fortress
The Czechoslovak fortifications built between 1935 and 1938 along the borders of the former Czechoslovakia were among the most advanced fortified defence systems in Europe. The planned fortifications consisted of lines of light fortifications (LO) and heavy fortifications (TO).
The light fortification line consisted of simple small bunkers with one or two small firing rooms, depending on the model and type of structure. Some also differed in various details according to the surrounding terrain and their intended combat role.
The heavy fortifications consist of independent blockhouses or artillery fortress complexes. Individual structures differed in their resistance to attack, appearance and internal layout. Their design took numerous factors into account, including the shape of the surrounding terrain and the strategic importance of the area. These considerations determined the location and armament of each structure.
LATEST NEWS: PROJECT TUNNEL
A 28-metre section of the underground passage between infantry blockhouses N-S 48 “U stodol” and N-S 49 “Pod lesem” remains unfinished. The Czech construction company was unable to complete it in 1938 because of the occupation of the border regions by the German army. Now, 88 years later, we are taking up the work interrupted at that time and will complete the missing section. The public fundraising campaign has ended, and thanks to our donors’ support, tunnel excavation is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2026. The connection will create a new circular visitor route and provide a safe emergency exit from the underground passages.
